Born in Astoria, Queens, Nick Lenchner is a multi-instrumentalist with a specialty in the double and electric bass. He grew up in northern New Jersey and attended the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College for five years. Under the tutelage of Linda McKnight, he graduated with a degree in double bass performance from the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University.

 

Nick was principal double bassist of the New York Youth Symphony for three years. He also performed with the NYYS Chamber Music Program and eventually took over as program manager. He has appeared with The Dream Unfinished, The Chelsea Symphony, and the Balkan Chamber Orchestra and performed at many of New York's prominent venues including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, NJPAC, Symphony Space, Beacon Theater, Bowery Ballroom, Brooklyn Bowl, Highline Ballroom, and Le Poisson Rouge.

 

As a member of the indie rock band Alex Bleeker & the Freaks, Nick has toured extensively throughout the United States and Canada. The Freaks have been featured on Thefader.com, Paste Magazine, Relix Magazine, and Sirius XM Jam On. Nick has worked with a diverse set of artists such as Phillip Glass, Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), Pharoahe Monch, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo), and Jenny Lewis. Currently, Nick is a member of the alternative hip-hop band Tubafresh.

 

Maintaining a deep passion for teaching, Nick is a teaching artist at the Abrons Art Center in Lower Manhattan and is on the double bass faculty for The Opportunity Music Project. His students have been accepted into the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, Juilliard Pre-College, and Manhattan School of Music Pre-College.

He is also the artistic director of Saylestock, a North-Jersey based music and arts festival that has raised nearly $100,000 for cancer research to date.


In 2019 Nick is thrilled and honored to present “Forever Melodies” for Solo Bass and Orchestra. Written by his long-time friend and collaborator, composer Ben Brody, the piece will be premiered by The Chelsea Symphony on Friday, March 8th.



Nick has dedicated his time and energy to making music accessible while creating empowered, passionate musicians. He teaches at the esteemed Abrons Art Center at the Henry Street Settlement in downtown Manhattan where he provides instruction to children, adults and ensemble groups. Along with this work, Nick maintains a substantial private studio where he instructs students in guitar, electric bass, bass, piano, and drums.

Nick has coached various ensembles for the New York Youth Symphony Chamber Music Program as well as the NJ Region I Orchestra bass sectionals. His private students have been accepted into the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music, Cleveland Institute of Music, Juilliard Pre-College, Manhattan School of Music Pre-College, and NJ All State Orchestra.
